Bellhousing
Hello, I am new to this board. I have a 1950 custom and I am changing out the 302 engine to the original 226 6 cylinder. The question I have is will the v8 bellhousing interchange with a 6 cylinder, or are they different? Thanks for any help you all can give me.

Re: Bellhousing
It is oddly pleasing that you would elect to go back to the six, which was widely distained in my hot rod days, in spite of the fact that the six is a very good engine. You will enjoy the low end torque.
A bit of advice: Get a complete list of what parts may be needed to make the conversion and be sure you have a source for all of them before you yank the 302. |

Re: Bellhousing
If the 226 you have doesn't have the full diameter starter & bell adapter plate, you will need to find that as well as the bell that fits it. I know the V8 has a half dozen more holes in it but I don't know if the hole spacing is different for the ones that are near the same locations. I would figure they have some different spacing on some. The bottom edge of the flange is flat on the six cylinder bell where the V8 is rounded a bit more. Other than the amount of flange bolt holes, that's about the only other way to ID one. I'm sure they are out there. Folks usually yank out the six and replace it with a V8 of one type or another. They then end up on flea pay or in the swap meet on here or the HAMB.
