Mitchell Overdrive Installation
There was an article in The Restorer on installing the Mitchell Overdrive.
The photos that accompanied the article showed pullers that were fabricated for pulling the drive shat and also the pinion as an assembly which meant that pinion load would have to be reset. I would like to find out if someone has dimensioning/sketches of these. I have an overdrive on order and would like to be able to fabricate these before it is shipped and have them made up so hopefully have minimal downtime during the installation. I have attached a pdf copy of that article showing the pullers. If someone has made these and would share the dimensions I would appreciate it. Thanks, Bob |

Re: Mitchell Overdrive Installation
Save yourself the trouble. Mitchell sells and/or rents the tools.

See attached article. On page 4 is a photo of the Mitchell puller.

Re: Mitchell Overdrive Installation
It is possible to "cobble" something together out of pipe to do the pull.
Requirement is... 1. clear the OD of the pinion bearings and give space to allow the pinion bearing to clear the housing on removal. 2. Provide some sort of "telescope-able" jack feature which can encircle the drive shaft and yet allow one to use a pipe-wrench to "unscrew" fittings to do the jackings. A hollow hydraulic ram (pricey) can do the same work if the hole is large enough. 3. Provide "clamps" to clamp the drive shaft. I see the Mitchell arrangement uses a four leg puller which substitutes all-thread and nuts and steel plates for the encircling jack device. Most of us have seen the KRW tool A329 for doing this. Hen's Teeth come to mind when I think of it. Joe K
