I have heard that before about oiless compressors. Why?

The picture you posted showed a compressor that looks like it did not receive a lot of love. Which might mean that maintenance may not have been a priority. Which in turn means that the air tank may have been rarely drained. WHICH MIGHT mean you are only one fill away from the rusty bottom of the tank blowing out. I would not pay $70 for it.

Good point about the tank condition. LPG tanks here require testing every 10 years here. I'm just about to do one or three soon.

140 psi could be like a bomb?

A minimum 50 litre/12 Gallon per minute compressor with a 60 gallon tank will be good for all around home workshop work. Make sure it is cast-iron sleeved cylinders and oil lubricated. This will ensure enough volume for spray painting and running a DA sander. This is marginal for a sandblaster. Pressure means nothing for air use in a shop. Volume is what is important. Gary

They are a short stroke, high speed, noisy compressor with a short working life. Ask any compressor repair shop about them, and if they are honest, they will tell you the same.

My FIRST Compressor was a Refrigerator compressor & a small Oxygen tank. I burned up 2 compressors, before I discovered they have a "START" & a "RUN" winding! Fortunately, I had a "COOL" Friend that RE-CYCLED old REFRIGERATORS/FREEZERS. The compressors' INLET served as a vacuum pump, to test Vacuum Wiper Motors! Once in awhile, I gave the inlet a blast of OIL, to keep it going---LOL

Oh. (Yes I have one. ) And yes it is very noisy, but I thought having no oil would be a good thing for supplying air for painting. Oh well. You live and learn. Luckily I got it on sale for very little (It is the HF tall one.), so I'll keep using it until it dies. Then get a better one.
