10” clutch issues are driving me nuts!!!! Help!
Hey guys I’m having a hell of a time with my clutch in my 31 coupe. I have a 1941 Ford flathead mated to a 39 toploader. It has a 10” flywheel with all new clutch parts. I’ve had the trans out 4 times now because I can fix this issue. The issue being is the throwout bearing is traveling at least a 3/4” til it hits the fingers and then it’s like hitting a brick wall. The fingers look like they are recessed way to much to the point that they are actually pointing towards the front of the engine instead of sticking back towards the trans. The clutch is a short finger type. Do I need a long finger???I’ve tried two different one of these clutches, both new with the same issue. Please lead me to the right combo!!!!! I have a small video of the bearing moving but it won’t let me post it

I do not but I will when I pull the trans again. It’s just a stock flat 10” flywheel

Just a guess, but you could have the wrong flywheel. Also, where did you get your clutch & pressure plate? Pictures of the pp after you pull trans, and pictures of c&pp removed from flywheel. Picture of fork and clutch arm on transmission would also help.

Is the flywheel perfectly flat or was it turned so the part where the disk engages a bit higher (thicker)?

The clutch does release though...right ? If so you might look into the T/O bearing carrier. There are a couple different carriers that position the T/O brg closer to the fingers. The usual prefix 48 part # is most common. Maybe Mac VanPelt will join in here with pt #'s. Charlie ny |

Actually the clutch never moves. Once the throwout bearing moves its 3/4” it stops dead. It’s like the throwout bearing hits a brick wall. Fingers don’t move one bit

It appears that possibly that pressure plate does not have the original, adjustable fingers. Chinese manufacturer?

Another potential problem is that the clutch disc is the wrong thickness for this particular clutch. If the clutch fingers are over-depressed, that tells me that something is not correctly setup between (or compatible) between the plate and the disc. You might want to contact Ft. Wayne Clutch and Driveline -- they should be able to get you sorted out.

The newer style pressure plates are showing up with that problem.
The new ones have fingers like sliced bread all the same. You want a 10" like Ford Made. USA. |

Mine doesn’t have those adjuster on the ends.

The problem you have can't be fixed.
When you remove the trans measure from flat of bell housing to tip of finger. With the right old style you will find out the finger with adj screws are 1/4' 3/8' closer the throw out bearing. They are all selling them and will be 1000s out there. sorry junk |

Another option is to talk to Ft. Wayne Clutch. They should be able to determine what you need to fix the problem.

My vote is incorrect clutch cover. Get one like picture in post #12, make sure disk is in correctly.
