Need help with this trim on my 36

Hi Folks,
I recently bought this 36 3 window and I'm trying to get ready to finish the interior. As you can see, the pieces don't line up. I'm thinking the dash should go on the outside of that lip, not the inside where it is currently. Am I correct?

This view is from the inside driver's side. The red piece on the left is the vertical part. The red piece on the right is the top of the dash. As you can see, it is mounted on the inside of the body lip.

The problem is with the installation, your windshield interior garnish does not clip over the lip of the windshield opening seam. Remove the screws from the garnish molding and remove the molding from the position you now have, align the bottom joint of the molding with the dash leg and place the flat lip of the garnish to the inside of the windshield opening seam and it should align correctly.

Dick, thank you. So the dash and the molding both go on the INSIDE of the body lip if I understand correctly.

Hi Heard,The screws goes from the outside,throu the lip,that has some kind of a anti squeak material on it and into the clinch nuts in the dash.I think its supposed to be a paper or fibre washer under the screwhead.

Ive been thinking about this since this mornings post and believe I may have misled you. I think you have the windshield garnish correct and the dash backwards. The windshield garnish cant go on the inside of the windshield opening because of the wood filler there fore it has to go like you positioned it, also this would make the dash clip over the window lip and the joint would marry. This also would act as a seal to keep any rain water from entering the driving compartment. There is an old original car down the road I'll check. So right now I'm changing my tune from the original idea.

Thanks, Dick. I was thinking about the rain factor as well and this seems to make sense. I didn't put either of these things in the car, but I'm getting ready to work on the interior and noticed this obviously wasn't correct.

It came with a spare engine, so I thought 'Wow that's cool!' 'Course I never saw a pic of the spare engine before I got the truck, LOL.

Not criticising, but is your 36 a 35 with 36 front sheet metal? I'm only saying it because it has the 35 wires. (36s had wide 5's).

I like the 36 and the truck looks like something I'd like to be tinkering with.

Hi Mart,
According to the serial number on the frame, it is a mid 1936. I'm assuming you are talking about the rims. If so, they are not original. Forgive my ignorance. I've done a couple of Austin Healeys but haven't owned anything with a flathead since the 70's. And I've never owned 1930's Fords, so I'll have a lot of dumb questions.

I'm planning to finish the 36 first. The red would not have been my choice and I'm not sure about the flat black. Looks better in person than in the pics. It'll stay that way for now unless I have to pull that dash completely out for some reason. I'm going to put the side panels back on, bumpers back on, do the interior and maybe lower the stance just a bit.

Then I'll be ready to tear into the truck.

Heard, I have been PM'ing you about this, but decided to post here hoping more people seeing it may mean a solution. I woodgrained a dash for my 1935 5 Window coupe. I took out the one in the car and put the grained one in and it has the same gap on the passenger side only. You have told me that yours has the same gap on each side. The dimensions of your gap and the one in my car are exactly the same. This misfit is a real mystery to me and I have a lot of time and $ in the woodgraining. I wonder if there is a difference between models or years as there is basically no way to determine if the dashes in our cars are original. I sure hope someone has some insight on this.....Matt in Alameda

Congrats on your nice 36. Suggestion: Change out that clear vinyl fuel hose as soon as possible as it hardens and cracks. Then it leaks. Fire hazard.

If mine, I wouldn't change one thing on that coupe (as pictured) except maybe those fuel hoses. What a sweetie! DD

Hi Matt. I'll take a pic of it in the morning and post it for you. I think the passenger side is essentially the same, but I think my issue is that the dash is mounted on the inside of the molding and the molding is mounted on the outside.

I don't know which is correct, but I don't think one should be on the inside and one on the outside. My suspicion is they should both be on the outside but I'm hoping someone will confirm this.

Why you would have only one side that is ill fitting seems strange to me for sure.
