Flywheel Removal

On my own, I am attempting to remove a multi-disc E28 flywheel to replace it with a later single disc flywheel. I have removed the safety wire. Is there is cheats way to stop the engine from turning as I try and loosen and remove the flywheel bolts? I have search the forum but no luck - though I did pick up a few great tips once I get the bolts out.

John, I have seen pictures of what looks like a modified pinion ned of a starter motor so that the pinion engages the ring gear but can't turn - probably welded in place. I have dropped the sump and put a bar right through the crankshaft at #4 and sitting on the bottom of the block. Rough and ready but it worked!

sometimes a socket and T bar onto the bolts and then a bash with a hammer onto the bar will get them free... the "socket and sock it " method

Using an Impact wrench usually gets the bolts out for me without the need to hold the flywheel. Some of the new brushless cordless ones are amazing.

I look for something to jam between housing and ring gear --- screwdriver, pry bar, old brake pad, piece of metal, even wood, much depends on what's laying on the ground nearby.

I do pretty much the same as John. Socket and breaker bar. Medium sized ball peen hammer and give the breaker bar a rap or two out towards the end and that usually breaks them loose straight away.

When you put the regular single disc flywheel on use this tip . The two long head studs at the front of the block are the same thread as the crankshaft flange . Screw these into the flange and it is then easy to slide the heavy flywheel on . Fit two bolts then remove the long block/head studs and fit the last two . This works like a dream and you dont drop the flywheel on your toes . Dont forget to safety wire the bolts.

Many years ago I made this gizmo out of a piece of scrap angle steel. The long axis bolts through the flywheel housing, and the edges of the short axis are ground to a bevel to fit between the teeth of the flywheel. Both edges of the short section are ground to a point to fit in the flywheel teeth. You place it so that it jams into the flywheel in which ever direction you're trying to avoid turning. I really don't recall what car I made this for but I've used it on several. Last time I pulled a Model A flywheel was in the late '60's so I assume I might have made it for that originally.

I suspect a similar device could be made from a present-day Unistrut L-bracket.

It is also necessary to change the bell housing, transmission shaft, etc.
The parts needed are spelled out in the service bulletins.

Many thanks for the tips, suggestions and tricks. What I was dreading turned out relatively easy! A few taps through the starter hole, rotate the flywheel, repeat x 2 and it just pulled off the dowels!
