Default Houdaille disassembly

I have a couple of Houdaille shocks that do not have the lock ring that locks reservoir cover on. I have soaked them in carburetor cleaner for several days, used heat on it and can't get it off, It is loose but will not come off. Can someone give some insight as to how this can is attached and how it comes off. There are no threads for it to unscrew. Please help. Thanks in advance.

on the back of your shocks is there a deep waffle pattern on them. I suspect they are 32 shocks. ALL original Model A shocks had a lock ring. 32`s did not

Yes, these do have the waffle design in the base. I understand this is for cooling the shock?

the 32 shocks a taller than the Model A`s and if you are running mechanical brakes, your brake rods will hit the shocks.

Thanks guys for the help! I'm Thinking there is a gasket type seal under this cap/reservoir that is hanging up in a groove that won't let it come off. So I will put it in my kiln at about 400 degrees for a couple of hours and see if that won't burn that seal out, as it says to do in the post above. I'm pretty sure this is an effort in futility because the rust and wear is probably to the point beyond repair, but I just need to see. After all I have the time!

Perhaps you have the 35-36 ones that the cover is crimped on, if you post a picture you will get advice that applies to your project

Thanks everyone for your very much appreciated help! The heat did not cook any gaskets out evidently as the reservoir still did not come apart, so it must be crimped on and is not meant to be removed. oh well, I have more shocks so forward and onward !!! I will see if I can get some pictures posted soon.
