Bent rear axles? never seen one?
Hi; I am selling some 18 tooth axles [35/36], and a customer asked if they are bent? I never heard of such a problem, especially a" bent taper". Is this possible and if so is there a repair procedure- say press repair? thanks Newc

Re: Bent rear axles? never seen one?
Doubtful they're bent, but put them between centres to check runout

Re: Bent rear axles? never seen one?
Normal service, probably not likely. A hard skid into a curb, for instance, I can see the possibility of a slight bend in that forged axle. ANY bend at all will produce a wobble in the wheel during rotation. A bend of a few thousandths at the axle would show significant run-out at the tread 14 or 15 inches distant from the center. DD

Re: Bent rear axles? never seen one?
Iv'e never heard anyone talk aobout a bend rear axle. Lots of broken ones due to improper tightening and cracks at end of keyway from running loose.

Re: Bent rear axles? never seen one?
I had a Ford 9" rear end in my '41 and some how bent the axle on a trip. Didn't hit anything on the way. Made it home and axle was bent in the middle, wobbled about 1/4 ".
Had new brgs install prior and was done in an arbor press. It really doesn't take much pressure. |

Re: Bent rear axles? never seen one?
I thought I had a bent axle on my 41, got one from a FB guy and when it arrived I checked it out and it was good. I noticed how the key was installed, it was backwards from mine. Little light comes on, mine was in the wrong direction. The bottom of the key is tapered on one end to fit the taper in the key slot which was preventing the drum from going on all the way, the threads on my axle were screwed up any way so glad to get the replacement. been going to get the threads fixed but haven got around to it.

Re: Bent rear axles? never seen one?
Hi again; Checked my axles between centers and one had a small .005" wobble, seemed to be the threaded portion. So chucked the gear in the chuck and used a carry stand to hold the axle and yes the 'wobble' is in the threaded portion, would not effect the axle taper or hub. I think that the hub pullers can distort the threaded portion. Have seen it now. thanks Newc
