Default The "Ahhhhhh" feeling.

At last had the Ahhhhhh feeling today!
With the new Mitchell overdrive installed went for a ride.
Quite nice to slide it into high and feel the engine relax
A little. Been waiting to do this for sometime.
Worth the wait. Gil. NoCal

It has been a long wait for me also, but mine should arrive this week Can't wait to experience the AAAAAH feeling. I'll start removing the Diff. on Monday in preparation.

Terry

A Mitchell overdrive is the best thing you can do to improve the Model A for long road trips. You will ask your self why did I wait so long.

enjoy

If you felt an Aaahhhhh moment, imagine how your engine feels.

Thanks Don, as you know we have some vast distances to cover and I'm not shy in doing the necessary distance to attend our National Meets. I have had the 3.54/1 diff ratio which was a big improvement over 3.78. I'll see how it goes with the 26%overdrive and if it proves to be to tall I have a standard diff to install if required. I am running a B Motor with a counter balanced Crank and it does pull strongly so I'm hoping to leave the 3.54 ratio in, time will tell.
Don, please give Anita a hug for Cheryl & I. We have missed you at the last couple of meets.

Runner, I'm thinking of putting a 3,54 rear end in one of my cars. I think I would need it if I put 16" wheels on it but even with the original ones, the higher gearing might be handy. As you know, I am not afraid of looong distances either.P;ease ;ey us/me know how it goes.

I am running the exact same 3:54 & 26% Mitchel with a touring engine and have been since February, The car is so much more derivable, now cruise really comfortably at 55 MPH and around town use 2nd with the overdrive in back local street with 30 MPH speed limit and is perfect. This is the best investment I have ever made, you will really enjoy it and wish you all the best!

Nice reports on the Mitchell.
I'd like to install one also.
Thanks for the info - either the 3.78 or the 3.54 works well with the 26% OD

I have a combo of 16" wheels/6:00 tires and 3:54 ring/pinion. I've contemplated installing a Mitchell for highway driving. Don't want to make such an investment, without good sound reasons.
Since you are new to this equipment use, I wonder at what rpms you are shifting into od ? Is it just going by ear thing or do you have a tach ?

Bill, I've got to ask, are you serious or are you just being Bill Williamson the joker. I guess whatever your reply is I suspect I will be left wondering.

No teach in the Icky.
Shifting by feel....just like I did without the OD.
Bottom line....doing the 45-55 the engine is just running easier.
Hopefully that equates to longer lasting.
Very sure it was worth the wait....and $$$$.
FYI....Mitchell must be doing something right....
They are booked 13 weeks out making these OD!

I'm DEAD SERIOUS, Runnerbun,
I wouldn't joke about something like that & mislead someone. Ted's Coupe is set up like that, used as an UNDERDRIVE, WITH THE SMALL DISPLACEMENT ENGINE, for mountain climbing. A stock Model A is a BETTER MOUNTAIN GOAT!
Minerva, with her Weber & single point Mallory, was a VICIOUS mountain car & we have some REAL MOUNTAINS here!
Model A with a Pinto is fairly good on flatland, except in head winds, as it is a HIGH RPM engine, too bad it is ONLY 121 Cubic Inches.

This must be the Pinto (Ford Cortina/Escort) engine you mention.

OK Bill, you're an excellent salesman. I believe you now. I guess there is no reason that it couldn't be used as an underdrive. Thanks for the lesson.

You will love the Mitchell the more you use it. It makes your 3 speed much more versatile and I bet if it was available in Henry's day the flathead V-8 would have come out much later.

I have a 30 std Fordor with a 3.78 gearing. I have installed the mitchel 26% OD. The rpm to hold 50 mph when not in OD is about 2200 RPM which is not stressing the standard factory design. With the 26% Mitchell ,you get 63 mph at 2200 rpm. I can't think of an example when it would be prudent to exceed 65 mph in a stock braked A. Also, with a higher geared rear end I think my car would lack power. I am very glad that I did not go for the 3.54 ratio. I have a 6:1 Snyder head, B carb, enlarged intake valves and enlarged intake manifold in order to utiilize the B carb. I have strong engine and good power but would not want less. Oh Ya, also have air cond, but this power draw is undetectable.

Ahhhhhhhh. Got the Mitchell overdrive installed late yesterday, I'm happy as pig in mud. My B motor does handle the 26% overdrive and the 3.54 ratio rear end very well. 50 to 55 mph the motor is just ticking over very nicely. 50 mph will be my new cruising speed. I don 't have any intention of ever going over 55 mph for safety reasons although the engine does have a fair bit more capacity.

Just once? Gotta see how she goes! I love my Mitchell, too. Got the sticker to prove it!! (Did you?) I "accidentally" topped 60 on a recent trip. It was downhill, and, well I just went with the flow for a while! Won't become a habit.

Got it up to 93kph (GPS speed) on a test run today (58mph) on flat road and the peddle had a fair bit to go before it hit the floor. 60+ is very achievable but is to fast for my liking.
Yes, I got my "I love my Mitchell Overdrive" sticker.

Well I was on a open road without traffic and in the car by myself and opened her up on a long flat straight road and she hit 76MPH using the GPS I actually could have gone a little faster but got cold feet, was very UN-safe, Stupid! and will NEVER do this again... just was being an OLD JERK! but my car runs so comfortably at 55 and is in complete control at that speed.
