Default Gearboxes a mystery? Mart lifts the lid on the 39 Ford 3 speed. A Sunday quickie.

Are the old manual transmissions a mystery to you? Don't worry, you won't get any uber tech in this one, just a very high level peek inside the venerable 39 Ford 3 speed.
These are very simple transmissions and most gearboxes up till this date use the same principles whether 4, 5, or 6 speed.
So get yourself a coffee while I share a few little demos showing how the gears are engaged and how the ratios are achieved.
This might be familiar to many people, and if so you can tell me if I go wrong. But for some it may shed some light on a rarely discussed subject.
The video is not long so your drink will still be warm at the end.
Check my other videos which are more in depth but hopefully you might find something interesting.
Cheers!
Mart.

Looks familiar Mart. I remember opening up the top of my 39 transmission right about 50 years ago. It was a learning experience for a clueless teen ager with crude tools in an unheated workshop in winter. The trans had locked up for some unknown reason. I eventually found a broken piece of a tooth had jammed between two gears. Easy fix. It still works fifty years later.

Mart, Thanks so much for that excellent video. Any chance of making a video on how to assemble and dissasemble a typical ford 3 speed transmission 1940-48?

19Fordy, it is essentially the same. I have a video in preparation for tearing down and reassembling the 39 type. That should also hold true for the 40-48. I could add in showing a 40-48 case and selectors but I don't have a complete box with gears to show.

I do need to tear the 39 box down again and reassemble it so might refilm it. I wasn't very happy with some of the footage from the original job.

Mart.
