powder coated wheels
I'm getting my 21" wheels powder coated soon and am wondering if there is a "preferred" way for the coater to hang the wheels. I don't want to have a visible mark or bare spot where the hook is.
Would it be best to hang them from the hole for the tube stem? or ?

Re: powder coated wheels
Any reputable place will know how to do it...if they don't run as this should be something you shouldn't have to worry about

Re: powder coated wheels
Our powder coater puts a wire all the way around the rim and hangs it from a loop in the middle. The finished product has a wavy line in the drop center where the tire flap snaps in. You'll never see the wire mark when the tire is mounted.

Powder coating is not exactly rocket science! Rest assured that is his part of the job, not yours. Wayne

Mitch, I worry about everything and take nothing for granted. I never had any dealings with this (or any) powder coater, so I just want to be informed beforehand. I never even considered using wire around the wheel. That's a great idea and i'll make sure the coater does it that way.

This is "same same" as my wheels were done ... One word of caution ... in case you use tubes and do not use a "tire flap" : On three of the 5 wheels I had done there was very sharp piece of Powder coat left where they removed the wire ... Sharp enough to cut an inner tube. Since this is inside the wheel / tire I just chiseled off the sharp edges and painted the bare metal with LustreCoat fuel proof glossy paint. It dries in 20 minutes to the touch and completely in 24 hours. Just in case some water gets inside the tire! Last edited by Benson; 06-08-2016 at 01:22 PM. |

Re: powder coated wheels
My 21inch wheels were powder coated 3years ago, and when I examined
them, the coating is everywhere perfectly. I remember this because I waxed the wheels outside and inner areas. Finish is still perfect. They were coated by RLD coatings in Ottawa cnd. Fred |

Re: powder coated wheels
After the wheels are powder coated scrap or ream the coating from the beveled edge where the nut seats as needed. If you don't it could lead to cracking and chipping the coating.

Re: powder coated wheels
I'd be far more concerned about the finish on the rims and spokes than a wire mark. powder coating just highlights rust pits. Bob

Re: powder coated wheels
I made a 'hub' up that allowed me to use the 5 bolts. This prevented the powder from getting where the bolts would be.
A warning: The places where the drum contacts the wheel need to be kept to bare metal!! Uneven build up will warp the drum. I mounted my powder coated wheels to the drums and checked with a dial indicator. I got like .010" warping because of the PC build up. I sanded the edge down and the drum went back to round. In reality, you would expect these areas to eventually wear down to bare metal anyway. |
