Default 1. brake glaze 2. mixing new and old lings

hello -2 questions
1. is emery cloth needed to remove glaze on linings with brass threads? seems like wood type sandpaper won't cut the brass thread in the lining. if not what do you use , 80 grit wood sand paper?

2. one of the shoe lining pairs has loosened and needs replacement. can only one lining be replaced on one shoe or must both linings on both shoes be replaced?

3. if glaze is considered normal,do you remove glaze every time you remove a hub ?
thank you

I would replace all the shoes on the axle.

Was the loose lining bonded or riveted?
If the lining is glazed, I don't worry unless it makes some noise or doesn't stop as well as it should.
If the new mining is the same material and thickness, then I'd feel OK doing the one shoe, otherwise I'd do both sides on that axle, as Bob mentioned.

I VERY STRONGLY AGREE.

I am a Mechanical Engineer and have worked with drum brakes for more than 50 years.

There is way too many inconsistencies with the coefficient of friction of brake lining materials, even of the same manufacturer, to only replace the linings on one shoe of an axle. This is a safety issue.

You can wind up with different coefficients of friction and have brakes that want to pull to one side or the other. This gets worse the heaver the application. Under a panic situation, you could lock up only one wheel on that axle and find your self in the opposite lane facing oncoming traffic.

No professional shop will replace the lining on one wheel only, no matter how new the lining is.
