No. Just change oil twice a year, or more often if you drive it regularly.

If you want to add a filter use an original bypass style.

Previous owner said he used Shell 20-50 and Lucas oil treatment, I just bought it and have not put it on the road yet, I need to fix an exhaust leak first.

Like Lawson said but change the oil more often. Like when it gets black on the dipstick. I like the look of an engine without all the oil filter crap taking up all that space.

No thoughts on the oil, but I like the new pics. That's going to be a nice car for you.

I vote for an oil filter, it's always a good idea to run one. As for oil I started using lucas hot rod oil, it has a hi zinc content which is good for early engines.

Oil has changed a lot. The last posters comment is important.
The recommendation used to be for a monograde oil because it transferred heat better than multigrades.
JWL posted some good info on oil a while back.
Some of the more suited oils for our old flatheads are diesel oils because of the higher zinc content (it's a legality thing)
One that I recall from JWL's list was I think, Cummins blue. I cannot recall the precise details without finding the post. Someone may have the list at hand.
This can be a prickly topic and the b.s. that goes with the marketing helps to confuse.

I have always believed that, given the conditions under which most of our vehicles are operated, the original bypass filters are the best way to go. The finer filtration they provide more than makes up for the increased volume provided by a full-flow system.

Roughly speaking, when you think that 10 percent of the oil bypasses to the filter. That means in theory that every 10 times the oil goes around, 100 percent has been through the filter. With only a gallon in the sump it all gets to go through that (finer than a full flow) filtration, fairly quickly.

I use the continuous oil filtering system. Every hundred miles I put in 9 gallons of gas and a quart of oil.

The flatheads actually had redundant filtration but it is quite antiquated by today's standards. The oil pick up in the sump has a screen for the big chunks and the crankshaft has the plugged bores in the con rod throws that act as a centrifugal particle separator. The bypass filtration was added to help skim the fine particulate out to keep the oil particle quantity to a minimum. Frequent oil changes were still a must but then any carbureted engine would be.

My 59AB rebuilt 35,000 miles ago. Drive it year round about 3 times a month. Has no filter. Change Penn 10w-30 every 1000 miles. Drains out a semi-transparent dark brown-black. Opened valve gallery recently and found only minor thickening of oil deposits.

Don't under estimate the power of a by pass filter. We put Harvard by pass filters on our Detroit 8 71 diesels and found with oil testing in a laboratory that they kept the oil contaminants to almost zero by comparing to tests before adding the filter.
