Key switch left ON
On a somewhat related post, the question came to my mind:
If the key switch on the dash board was left in the "ON" position for long period of time, could this do damage to the coil and or points (or maybe both)... I've not do this thankfully at this point... Thanks, -Mike Cleveland, Ohio |

It just happened to me I put my car away at the beginning of Nov . I ran all of the gas out of the bowl until she stopped ,and I must of got destracted and left the ignition on .I was finally able to check on it last week and found the switch was left on the battery was totally dead .I put a slow 2 amp charge for two day and to my great relief she started right up .I tried again today hopping the battery was still up and it was again she started up and all seems well .THANK GOD!!!

Re: Key switch left ON
A club member left his key on. In about 1/2 hour, the coil caught fire.
Was he running 12 volt on a 6 volt coil? Maybe 8 volt battery? |

Re: Key switch left ON
How do you leave the key on?When turning the car off , do you......
Choke the car off? Turn the fuel off? Stall the car? I turn the key off to turn the car off. |

Re: Key switch left ON
In the garage not only do I take the key out and turn the gas off but I pull the main fuse just for safety reasons.

Re: Key switch left ON
Yeah as of late I have been taking the fuse out as well. I once left my blinkers turned on and didn't realize till about 3 weeks later and not only did it drain the battery, it drained it so much it wouldn't recharge, so when I shut it off, take the key and pull the fuse to avoid any future problems.

I had turned the gas off and ran the gas out. Not thinking, I told my Dad, who is not familiar with popout switches to turn the switch off. He turned the key, pulled it out but did not push in the popout.

Re: Key switch left ON
When putting the car away in my garage, I have been in habit of running the fuel out. Then, I press in the popout, then off with the battery "kill" switch and finally I hang the keys on the gas shut off valve. I have an indented firewall.

Re: Key switch left ON
Nice. so you turn off the fuel valve --let it run out of gas... As for indented firewall (Late 31') Do you have a carburetor with a bulb on it? I have a 30' engine and two fuel value (org. 31' on the engine side of the firewall and another make-shift one half way down... both work (my guess is why this was done but it's the way i got my 31'

Re: Key switch left ON
A fellow member of our local Model A Club left his key on. When he went back to start the car, his coil had melted down all over his engine. It was a Great learning experience. Replaced the coil and the engine started right up.
