Military?? shunt generator- What does the shunt mean?
Hi All:
At Hershey, I picked up a NOS in the wooden crate two belt shunt generator. I'm assuming it's military. I really just wanted the pulley, but now I'm curious. It also has two bosses and a brass cover on the back place that I'm assuming mounts a governor or a tach drive. It looks like a has a sealed bearing and not a bushing. How does a "shunt" generator differ from a regular one? I'll post pictures later tonight. Thanks, Tim. |

I was curious so Googled it. Here is what turned up A shunt generator is a type of electric generator in which field winding and armature winding are connected in parallel, and in which the armature supplies both the load current and the field current for the excitation. |

Any reason it can’t be used on a normal street driven car if wired up correctly?

The shunt generators hold voltage to very close tolerance. The military used them for electronics power up such as radar sets and carbon ark search light power units. They are likely hard to get parts for unless a person knows what their original application is. Last edited by rotorwrench; 02-08-2023 at 06:08 PM. |
