Default Distributor worth rebuilding?

While the engine is at the rebuilders (I now have a chunk of rear main on my key chain) I tore the distributor down for rebuilding since the rebuilder thought there was too much slop in the bushings.

Well I just found a crack (picture below) and was wondering if I need to look for another core?

Thumbs up Re: Distributor worth rebuilding?

Cracks never get smaller. So I would get another dizzy body. They are not hard to find nor expensive.

Very true, I might already have one in a box at home now that I think of it. Can't beat that price

I would never try to rebuild a core like that. I believe you would be wasting your time and money.

The real question that comes to mind is why did this crack happen in the first place. I would be using the two piece distributor shaft during the rebuilding process.

Yes on finding another body and using the 2 piece shaft. They can get cracked also by people forcing too large of a bushing in the casting or using too much force pushing the old ones out.

Bob C, thanks for that article. Can someone elaborate on the two piece shaft? Is it the one all the vendors carry? If so that's what was in this dizzy. Will look for the spare after work and hope it isn't cracked.

The two piece allows for any misalignment between the head and block (acts like a universal joint), the one piece does not.

Well, as luck would have it I found a good rebuildable core and one that still has nice tight bushings in my spare parts. Also found a one piece shaft. Didn't realize those existed, is that what Ford used originally?

The long one piece shaft is aftermarket.
