If the drums are still on pull them off and check to see if brakes are hanging up. If there is a clunk and drums are off, time to pull and look inside.

if there is no lubricant on the gears and backlash is on the high side it could just be the pinion tooth contacting the ring gear tooth

Does this have anything to do with eating baked beans? (Grin)

Is this a fresh rebuild? If it's not, even drained there would or should be still some lube on the gears etc. How do you know the insides look ok? You cant see that much thru the fill hole. If a fresh rebuild, set to18- 20 INCH POUNDS preload, there might be a tick because there is some drag, but not a clonk.

How far back and forth are you turning it? Just a smidge? Or 10 or 15°? Or?

Did you reassemble it using the same or identical gaskets/shims, or did you follow factory procedure for setting up backlash and preload on the ring gear?

I put it on the bench and began to inspect (when it was together) It had a little the play back and forth. From there I drain the oil ,very little in it,took it apart and inspected the internals. Everything looked good even wear on ring and pinion.that is where I am at this point. steve

Did you make sure to keep track of the side gaskets so you can reassemble with the same preload and backlash settings?

Steve, If you have the original gaskets you can measure them with a caliper for reference noting what thickness was in what side, however , I would reset the preload using new gaskets anyway. It could have been off. You should have about .005 backlash on the pinion.
You will have to remove the pinion and driveshaft to set the bearing preload first before setting he tooth contact with the housing gaskets left and right.

Good luck!
