I tend to use an atf/acetone mix. I mix it in a bottle with a cap and use an acid brush to apply it. It keeps a long time as long as you put the cap on. A quick shake before using it gets the atf in suspension for brushing on.

I have a can of NAPA "Freez-off" that I keep for situations I think will be particularly difficult. It drops the temperature of the stuck fastener as well as being a penetrant. As such, you have to be quite precise on how it is applied. So far, it has not let me down (which might be just luck).

I finally remembered to check on the old can of Whiz Loosen All that has been one of the best penetrating fluids I've found. I doubt it is still available as I think this tin is likelly 50 years old or more.

Man, I want some of that Whiz!

I long ago gave up on the idea that any of the penetrants is really going to help at all on a truly rusted and stuck fastener. I've never finally gotten something like that loose and found any evidence that any of my hopeful sprays had ever creeped in there. But I've learned it'll help a lot on other things: sheet metal screws, hard to get at little nuts and bolts, etc. I finally bought a spray can of Kroil, like it so much I bought another big sized can.

50/50 mix of tranny fluid and acetone. I have it in a spray bottle so I have SOME control over where it goes but it works GREAT!

It does separate so you have to shake it every time before use.

Never used 50/50 atf/acetone mix. Maybe the best. Guess I need to mix up some.

kroil is pretty amazing though. Wish I had a case of it.

PB blaster is a good second/third, for ease of availability.

Time and patience is always good too.

I've tried all those, atf+acetone, time+ patience, and the Merc flathead engines are still seized solid after close to a year soaking. I'm losing hope :-)

Not sure what your situation is, But it is what it is...

More info... or heat. Sometimes stuck is just stuck.

Might have found a quite a bit of difference between arokroil and Kroll. I will stick to Kroll.

I’ve used every thing under the sun for the past 50 yrs. and as others have said the mixture of 50/50 acetone and atf works better than anything I’ve ever used. The next best two were
Kroil and PB Blaster.
My 2 cents

My favorite is a mix of oxygen and acetylene. Chase with a couple shots of pb blaster as it cools.

I may be a dunce, but liquid wrench still works 4 me; sometimes i add a mild squirt of wd40. But hey, i know a guy who used Coke/Pepsi in a froze smc and it worked loose. He flushed it with kerosene and drove the snot out of it! ??? m

I bought a gallon can of Kroil years ago. I use it in a spray bottle. The old school auto parts store in town sold gallon cans of WD-40, and WD-40 labeled spray bottles. I bought one of those bottles for the Kroil, and it has worked great ever since. Aerokroil is just Kroil in an aerosol can. The gallon can/spray bottle will likely last a person a lifetime. It's by far cheaper in the long run, and you never run out.

Other penetrants also work. Which to use, usually depends on how much penetrating vs. lubricating is required. The ones that penetrate the most, generally lube the lease, and vice versa. With penetrants, one thing that is required is patience. Once cannot spray it on, and immediately break out the wrench. It can take days of re-applying to allow it to creep and do its thing.

If something is stuck bad... like studs in a flathead block... there is no replacement for a real life torch (not handheld propane) that can heat things red/orange hot to break the rust bond.

WD40 is only good for lightly rusted bolts, but oxy/acetylene is best for really rusty bolts and nuts.
IF YOU HAVE A SIEZED MOTOR, TRANNY OR ANYTHING BIG, then put the whole thing in a drum of WATER and let it soak for if necessary up to 3 months. Water caused the rust and it will dissolve and loosen the rust better than any penetrating oil. I have done this to a 29 chev motor and head that had been in the rain for 20 years. The valves came out the head in 3 weeks, the pistons took nearly 3 months and we salvaged the motor and reused the pistons. It REALLY DOES WORK. I got this tip from an Australian hot rod magazine some years ago, try it.
