Default Top Trim Binding (E'28 Open Vehicle)

Another cold day has 'forced' me to stay inside and digest the new RG/JS.
First, THANK YOU to the many kind folks who invested time and fortune in the revision! Well Done and VERY Much Appreciated!

I realize it was not a ‘change’ from the previous edition, but after closer inspection, it appears I need to locate a source for ‘Locktite’ Trim Binding (Black) instead of ‘wire-on’ style (or more common 'hidem').

Can anyone help with a source?

Thanks

I am curious about the "cape"

The thin rear piece that goes out rear from the hidem (or locktite)..

Was this a separate piece, and was it just for appearance, or was it one piece with the main roof material, and designed for rairwater to flow rearwards under hidem?

I had a roof made by a so called professional trimmer, and he did the front roof first and when proceeding to do the rear section with window, I bucked up and said WHAT??

The rain will drive under the roof and go down inside the back curtain if you overlap it that way.

He said the tightness of the hidem will stop water going down inside , I laughed.

Almost fisticuffs, but the moron did it my way and I got my car out of there in one piece.

I asked for a cape and a rear zipped window in my roadster, but this was just all too hard .

So i bought a sewing machine and learned trimming and added my own cape .

And made some very nice side curtains which looks far better than his job.

Rant over.

Charles,
I took some picture of Mark Maron's fine point 29 roadster at Toledo last summer. As you know 28's and 29's are either exactly or very close to the same. I am attaching a couple pictures of the top trim on his car. I am pretty sure Bill Sturm did the upholstery and top on the car. Note that the front trim is Hidem/Locktite?? and the rear trim is Locktite. I have heard the Bill makes the Locktite trim himself, but I am not sure (Hidem is commercially available). The car scored very high, so the trim must have been close to original. There is something I noticed in between the first two pictures. I took the first picture a day or two before the judging and the trim looks like Locktite to me, the second picture I took after judging looks like Hidem. Maybe it is a optical illusion - you be the judge.

Rusty your second or middle picture is of a Phaeton....it's the first and third pictures that show the same Roadster...

That's my thought also..

Wish I had Mark's top on my Roadster...real NICE!

Al,
You are correct! Thanks for point the mistake out (the first one I ever made)! I mislabeled the picture in the middle of the above post. The middle picture is Dean Drenzak's early 28 phaeton. However, I believe Bill Strum did both tops. Question; Why the different trim used in the two open cars. I suppose very early open cars could be different than later cars. Both vehicles scored extremely high in judging.

While this is on my 28 fordor, it is original top and locktite used on it. Don't know why phone sometimes rotates pictures, this rotated 90* to left. This is driverside back, large portion of locktite faces front.

I am wondering how the Locktite trim is installed on a car. I would think that some part of it lifts up and allows nails to be used to install it, but I have no idea how it would fold back down to cover the nails. It is easy to understand how Hidem hides the nails, but not the Locktite.

Wow, this was an interesting string that ended too soon. There are individuals making locktite but it is not cheap and the person who made mine, which incidentaly is superior, does not want to do anymore. The wire-on is available in colors from Restoration Supply and from Macs...but you have to use their colors. It is a good product, no variablity though. For wire-on, talk to Cory at L Car in Ohio...he makes a good product using a machine that LB used to own... and before that a vendor for Ford. It is a good product. Is there a discussion about where to find a good version of the tips? I have good tips for my 180A but it was like looking for a needle in a haystack as swap meets.
