Default Original tie bolt?

Is this an original tie bolt for a '38 rear spring? The bolt is solid, how does the alemite get grease to the spring channels? There is a slot cut in the threads of the nut that the alemite screws into, but grease would have to go by the tie bolt in the holes in the springs. That doesn't seem likely.

If it isn't original, are they available aftermarket?

thanks,
Gene

grease path is down the slot in the threads and around the perimeter of the bolt to the spring leafs. Sounds like the original bolt with a square head.

And you don't use grease---grease clogs the passages, Ford spring oil was about 2/3 light weight oil (about ATF),1/3 talc (polishes the leaves and is a"dry" lubricant)---and originally a little ground asbestos---shake before use----keep grease gun just for spring lube

this lube method was introduced in 36, the picture in thebulletin shows little notches in the centerbolt hole--grooves down thecenter of each leaf--the lubricator fitting nut (slotted tie bolt nut)

Gene, don't waste your time and effort trying to lube your springs by that method. The lube will spew out the sides of the leaves as fast as you pump it in and never reach the ends of the leaves where it is needed.

There is no easy way out, you must dismantle, grind and smooth off the burrs, and reassemble using either fifth wheel grease or with teflon as found at Hot Rod supply houses.

Once grease has been used lube won't reach the ends of the leaves till the spring is taken apart and cleaned

springs that have only the proper lube the lube reaches the tips of the leaves

Kurt, that's good info. I didn't know that. How often do you have to lube them?

Sorry, Picture added to original post

Kurt, thanks for the explanation. What kind o grease gun will hold that mixture. The ones I have are designed to push from the inserted grease tube. I don't think the seal will hold a semi-liquid.
