Default Oil Pump Drive Gear

I am assembling a spare engine and for some reason, I never looked at the oil pump drive gear until I was ready to install it. It is horribly worn! I have never seen one this bad. The gear teeth are almost worn to a point. I have a replacement coming. Is this common? Glad I noticed it while i was rebuilding the oil pump.

Dirty oil makes everything in there wear out.

I thought it odd that the gears, bushings, and everything else in the oil pump looked good. Maybe the pump was replaced at some point but not the drive gear. This is an extremely clean engine with virtually no wear on anything else.

Those gears are available in oversize's, if your cam shows wear this may be needed.

Jim, you just reground my cam a month or 2 ago.
The cam measures 1.556" Should I go with an .004" oversize gear? I already ordered a std gear.

Changed to a new plunger and spring. New aluminum timing gear.
