first time disassembling a model a engine// removing valves I now realize you must knock down the valve guide before valve can exit head according to les Andrews red book. I have keepers out now.

is a special tool required or can I improvise an other way?

You need a special tool. They are readily available from parts suppliers, and relatively cheap compared to trying improvise.

This true and the tool is cheap insurance but...

If you don't mind risking bending a valve or breaking a punch, a small diameter punch (1/8") can reach in under the valve head and contact the top of the valve guide and a tap with a hammer can get the guide started.

This is how I have done it on several occasions. Go slow, go easy and you can ease them all out.

But you're on your own for damaging the valves or chipping the guides (they're HARD). Wear safety glasses.

The one Mike shows is the only one to buy. Be sure to use a large flat punch right in the center of the valve.

The curved tools loose too much impact force in the curves, and will not remove a stuck guide.
