Default Model a rear end

Hi. I知 a new guy from Nevada and I知 not very computer literate so my son helped me get set up here. My grandpa bought 29 pickup new and I知 the second owner. I drove it to school in high school years. That was 50 years ago and now I知 restoring it. I知 doing all my own work but I need a little guidance from time to time. Hope you guys can help. The axles on both sides have maybe an eighth of an inch wiggle up ab down, not end play. Is this normal and the bearing and tapered shaft carry and center it or do I need to disassemble and replace parts. Thanks

Yes, When the drum is off. Look inside your drum and look at where the bearing rides and you'll see how it was designed. The rear axle bearing rides on the protrusion sticking out from the axle housing. Take the drum off and the axle becomes "free Floating".

If you have not already done so, I would purchase the Model A Mechanics Handbook by Les Andrews. There are 3 volumes. Vol 1 would be most useful but I would suggest buying all 3. These are available from most Model A Parts suppliers such as Bert's in Colorado or Brattons on the East Coast.

Good luck with your project and welcome to The Barn.
