Brake shoes
I have 48 Lincoln backing plates on the front of my 39 ford pickup. I ordered new shoes and when installing them noticed there is no short shoe only 4 long ones other than that they are identical to the old ones. Any woes in running them this way?

Re: Brake shoes
I believe 48 Lincoln brakes are Bendix style brakes and all shoes are the same size.
I think you will be fine. The Ford Lockheed brakes have long shoe in the front and short shoe at the rear. Read all the info. in this thread. Pretty interesting. Shows pictorial of brakes. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...-numbers.6468/ Last edited by 19Fordy; 09-01-2019 at 04:47 PM. |

Re: Brake shoes
Bendix shoes are normally short and long (short in the front), but no idea on the Lincolns. The Lincoln part number looks the same for the both shoes, so must be the same.

Re: Brake shoes
My Bolling Brothers repro Lincoln backing plates require a shorter front shoe to self energise.
If in doubt I would call them about your originals and parts needed. John

Re: Brake shoes
Did 2 hours of searching this morning (Google, Bing, HAMB, Fordbarn) and found this explanation. Early Lincoln Bendix brakes had both shoe lining the same length. The front shoe lining was shortened after it was determined it wore faster and needed replaced before the rear shoe. Therefore the lining was shortened on the front shoe so both wore the same.
I want to finish installing today as it is my only day off. I think I will mark the shoe length from the old shoe and install like they are. If there is a performance issue I can always cut the bonded lining down later. Thanks for the responses very much appreciated. |

Re: Brake shoes
Have it backwards. Bendix forward shoe is the short one, Lockeed sometime have the short rear shoe and sometimes equal length.
