The clamps I noticed are tight around the exhaust pipe flange on the pipe side and flared to clamp to the bell end of the exhaust manifold. Some of the aftermarket mufflers have a flare that is not very wide.
the bell end of the exhaust mainfold gets pitted and needs to be dressed smooth, I use a flat bastard file for that.
The flare on the exhaust pipe can be enlarged with a ball peen hammer.
Does that help?

Exhaust flange dresser Made by Craig Lewis from an old valve and lathe tool and short piece of pipe.

Aries sells a clamp with heat resistent padding that allows for this necessary movement.
Also, I have seen the clamp at the manifold and the muffler flange incorrectly installed with one side 180 degrees(flipped over). The clamp narrow sides go on the exhaust pipe side - both halves.
There are other tricks to get a good fit, but I won't share.

I think this is what Bob meant, the two halves of the clamp are made to fit both the pipe which is smaller diameter and the manifold which is larger diameter. If you put one half on wrong it will still bolt up but will not hold anything tight. Like this:

Now I am not sure which diagram is correct. The correct way would hold the exhaust pipe to the flange tightly. The 2 halves need to be oriented the same. half right won't work.

Thanks Cool Hand and Bob (and others). I've got a bit of a leak at this join but now have some good techniques to correct it. THAT's what the FB is all about - helping nuff nuffs like me to acquire a few skills!

In my drawing, the half on the right was purposely upside down. Normally the upper part of the clamp fits tightly on the larger manifold diameter, but in the upside down position in the drawing it was over the smaller pipe diameter so there was a gap there instead of being snug to the pipe.

No explanation necessary. Pretty clear drawing. Now I know for sure..

What a Great feeling it is to Now realize that not all Model 'A' make noise up front and smell of Exhaust Fumes.

Several years ago, my wife and I attended a Nat'l Model A gathering at Frenchlick, Indiana and I noticed that most of the 'A's being driven around the lot were quiet. I just assumed they all had Aries muffler systems until I re-aligned my system properly.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE..........AFTER ALL THOSE YEARS.

I have a similar alignment problem with my standard coupe. Would it help to slightly twist the rear hanger so that the exhaust pipe ended up a little closer to the manifold? It currently contacts the rear motor mount. The manifold is a waffle type.
