Trans mount 39 top load
I have assembled my 39 top loader out of parts, never having a complete trans.
The trans mount, which I call the bat wing will mount in 2 different ways. It's not centered. Which way is right? Mounted in a Model A frame. Thanks, jim |

Re: Trans mount 39 top load
Here it is mounted. You can see the ears go backward. Don't forget to put the 4 bolts in that hold the torque tube in place when you assemble it to the rest of the trans!

Thanks to Mac VanPelt for the use of his pictures today. These two "bat wing" thingies are normally referred-to as "bearing retainers". They will in fact bolt to the rear of the transmission in two different ways. When using such in a different vehicle as you are, all bets are off and either way may be used to help adapt to your situation. Either way will have no adverse effect on the operation of the transmission. DD . |

Re: Trans mount 39 top load
FYI, the six bolts that hold the rear bearing retainer on should have a drilled head for safety wire.

Re: Trans mount 39 top load
The 78- 7085 rear bearing retainer used on the 39 and other transmissions has a cast bump out with a small hole for the clutch pedal return spring. The bump out and hole go on the drivers side.

Re: Trans mount 39 top load
Any of the earlier retainers will fit a 78 case back to 1932. This gives more wiggle room for adaptation.
