Hey Barners,
I'm wanting to replace the diode cutout on my 3 brush generator with a 6 V regulator. What is the correct way to do this ? Thanks !! |

Re: 6V regulator to 3 brush generator
There was a guy that took the cut out.and turned it into a regulator of sorts. I had it done you still adjust the brush to charge some and this thing shut it down when it had charge enough. works!Even when i cranked a long time.it worked been using ten years now.Sorry i have no idea who he is now.I.ll look see if i have some paper work in the morning.

Re: 6V regulator to 3 brush generator
I think you can buy them from Snyder or other Model "A" stores.r. They look just like a cut out but are a voltage regulator. There is also a guy on the Model "A' forum that makes them for Model "A"s which have three brush generators.
I would post the question on the "A" forum and state year, make and model of your car.

Re: 6V regulator to 3 brush generator
Yes I've seen those cut outs that function like regs.
I already have the regulator; what I'm looking for is a diagram to wire it to a 3 brush gen. The car is a 32 roadster with a 37 21 stud and runs the A style 3 brush gen that mounts the fan on the pulley. The 6V regulator I have is the std square type but for 6V. Anyone done this and how did they wire it in. Thanks... |

Re: 6V regulator to 3 brush generator
The regulator that mounts on top of a 3 brush generator and looks exactly like an original cutout is made by a company called Fun Products. You could probably find their address or website on Google. It would wire up just like an original cutout.

Re: 6V regulator to 3 brush generator
Back to question... I don't know the exact answer, but over on the Model A sites, either the Barn or Ahooga, look for Tom Wesenberg, out of MN. I believe he is the expert. About 6 months ago he told me exactly what to do to use the 6V regulator with a 3-brush generator. I've since forgotten the answer, but wish I'd saved it.
Tom also sells his own EVR (electronic voltage regulator) to replace the adjustable brush. Tom's EVR fits inside the generator, and you keep your cutout on top (I think). I think the answer (but don't quote me) might be... remove the adjustable brush, then take the field wire that is previously grounded, un-ground it, and connect to field term on the 6V regulator. If you get the info straight from Tom, I'd be interested in seeing it re-posted. |

Re: 6V regulator to 3 brush generator
Three different three brush regulators are available. The Fun Products regulator replaces the cutout and requires no other connection. It functions by turning the output on and off by shorting the output to ground in a chopper fashion resulting in a proper average output. It recommends you reduce the output current to the maximum you will draw to minimize the heat. The other two are true electronic regulators that mount inside the generator and eliminate the third brush. They require that you have a working cutout. One by Tom Wesenberg mounts on the brush holder and one by James Peterson is mounted on a replacement generator band.

Those Model"A" people have the experts in this electrical field.
