Default 1935 running board mat glue.

Hi All,
I have a new set of Drakes running board mats that I brought back from USA on a plane. Unfortunately you ca NOT take glue on the plane.
I have sandblasted and prepped the boards and sanded and cleaned the back of the rubber mats as per instructions. I then tried 2 types of contact glue, but the glue will not adhere properly to the rubber. As I cannot ship glue overseas, can anyone tell me what type of glue I should use. Many thanks.

Is it possible that the product you cleaned them with has left a film or something preventing the contact cement from adhering. I don't know what type of glue you have available in your country; but solvent based contact cement has always worked for me.

As an alternative, urethane windshield sealant works too; but is nasty stuff if you get in on yourself (which it seems to have an affinity to do). Used urethane on my father-in-laws '37 with good results.

Here's what we used earlier today to apply the covers to the boards of a friend's 1940, after first cleaning them with acetone: https://www.homedepot.com/p/DAP-Weld...0272/100125525.

I've successfully used that Weldwood contact cement on several sets of running board covers, although I use lacquer thinner for the cleaning of both the boards and the covers.

Check with the folks in your area who build custom kitchen cabinets. They must use some type of contact cement.

What ever you use...Make sure it goes on evenly! Any bumps or lumps will still show through the covers..

Thanks guys for all the input.
I did clean both boards and mats with laquer thinners to no avail. I then used a disc grinder with 36 grit on the back of the mats to remove any shiny patches and give a roughened surface but again the contact glue ,(made in South Africa) still would not adhere.
I was thinking of using Pratley's twin pack epoxy glue, but perhaps the suggestion of the windscreen black sealer/glue might be the answer, that stuff sticks like crazy and it does have a bit of working time before it sets.
Thanks all.

Scotch-Weld 1300 or 1300L is what a lot of shops use to install deicer boots onto the wings of airplanes. It is formulated more for neoprene rubber. I have no idea what your covers are made of. Whether you can get it in your location or not is another question. If you know any local aircraft mechanics, you might ask them what they use.

If it doesn't stick it isn't the right stuff. If nothing is found in Zimbabwe, maybe down in South Africa?

just did the ones on my 38 coupe. Used contact cement-then super glue on the backside through the little holes. Worked great.

Check with a large industrial supply co for GoodYear rubber cement used in splicing conveyor belts.
