Default anyone know the correct taper for an axle?

i have a friend who may cut a 48 axle down to 34 length for me using a cnc lathe. he says we could figure it out, but a blue print spec would be easier for writing the program. any ideas? thanks, skip

For what it's worth, seems like I remember 7 degrees. DD

Ford may have used their own taper but it could be Morse or one of the other types. I just don't know for sure. Here is a chart. https://littlemachineshop.com/reference/tapers.php

Ford did like 7*. They used that on the steering shafts.

I cut the later axles down to fit my 33 and 34,I use my lathe and set up the taper on the donor axle with the compound slide and using the tool and .001 feeler gauge set the tool up at each end of the taper,I tried using a dial gauge but due to the fact that it was nearly imposible to find the centre line of the taper it never came out right, the feeler gauge method has worked fine and just check the taper with fine paste in the hubs to make sure the fit is right, one thing you end up with is the keyway ends up in the thread area,no drama though.
Those ford axles are VERY tough and you need an insert tip tool to cut the taper and a full profile thread insert to do the threads.

lawrie, thats exactly what i had planned to do, but when my retired eaton machinist said he could write the program and sneak in to a machine that would do it all, taper and thread, and key way just standing there watching it, well that sounded pretty good to me.

If you have an axle a machinist should be able to figure out fairly quickly. Believe I would use a hub to check the tapper after machining the axle. Something like lapping and checking a valve/valve seat.

The taper is a bit much for the taper attachment on my old Causing and it would be a bear to offset the tail stock and use a dog too. The compound idea isn't bad and carbide tip bits would certainly be a must. It could be finished with a surface grinder attachment but lapping would likely get it done. Cutting in the keyway would also be a different practice than the norm.

A person has to have some patients to do all that but it's like the old dirty thirties adage, use it up & wear it out, make it do or do without. The old axles sure don't grow on trees.

Cas 3
I,m sure your mate would know how to work out the angle after seeing an axle.
