Default Main Bearing

I took apart a Model A engine this week that someone let rain get into the oil pan. After disassembly I found all of the bearings near perfect and the fit was great. The only damage is on the center main journal. Where the oil feed hole lines up from the block there's a small shallow 1/4 inch rust spot with shallow line following the bearing grove imprinted on the crank journal.Could the spot be ground below flush and then polished ?

Thanks for any input.

No need to grind--just clean off the rust. So long as nothing is sticking up above the original surface, you should be fine as it sounds like only a very small area is affected.

A machine shop can polish the journal if you can't there are fine emery cloths and finishing sandpapers available

I agree,, clean it up with some emery paper and see what it looks like.. Its surprising what these bearings can tolerate..

The correct thing to use when you try to clean up the rust spot off the Crank is called Crocus Cloth. Go to any automoive machine shop, and ask for it !! They will probly give you a piece when you tell them that you are using it on a Model A. Sand Paper or Emery Cloth could scratch the Journal.
