I'd take the bale off & put a crab cap on there. The crab cap would sure look different in that location. That would certainly make a better distributor out of a boat anchor for multi carb set ups. It would be interesting to see how the drive was set up. A person would still have to adjust the timing but at least you can get to it to do that. Once it is set, a person could still pull the distributor to do maintenance without changing the timing.

Pretty simple to make with a lathe. The drive adapter could be made from a old cam shaft
