Default Transmission tower assembly

I have dismantled a very rusted early 28 transmission tower and there are two parts in the assembly that will need to be replaced. These two parts; a fiber doughnut and doughnut retainer are not available in the vender catalogs that I have. I find it very strange that these two parts are not mentioned in the repair manuals either. Are they not needed?

The early transmissions had these two parts along with a shorter spring. I believe if you replace the spring with the longer one in place of the two parts it will work.
