Engine Squealing
1930 Town Sedan
I just reinstalled my engine after new flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, t/o bearing, water pump, rebuilt distributor, rebuilt carb, and timing gear. The engine started rough as expected but then started this screaming noise within a minute or two. I disconnected the water pump and generator to rule those out but still just squeals. This is a YouTube video of what it looks and sounds like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHjN4vqr-XA Looking for any ideas on what I could have done wrong!!! |

Re: Engine Squealing
Starter bolts hitting the flywheel? Maybe?

Re: Engine Squealing
Just checked the starter bolts. They seem like the right length. Great idea though!!!

Re: Engine Squealing
Also checked the front engine mount and that seems clear. Also a great idea! I will lubricate the distributor

Re: Engine Squealing
Great! Easy fixes are always welcome around here!
If that starter mounting bolt had been a tad longer, the engine might have been difficult to turn over, as it would have been pushing harder against the flywheel. Such a situation has fooled a great many Model A guys over the years into thinking the engine was stuck. I believe your squeal would have gone away in short order because the turning flywheel would have worn down the end of the softer metal bolt shank. As you press in the clutch, the crankshaft moves forward a little bit and that would have also contributed to ending the sound by spinning with more force against the bolt end. 'Sure would have been unnerving until the bolt wore down, though! Marshall |
