I would not attempt to add a boss in the oil pan unless the pan is off and you have access to both sides of the metal.
The return hose kits are around. In fact, I'd just sold one a week ago.

Thanks, Pete, for the leads. The first item looks interesting, but I'm hopeful to find the hose kit without the canister, since I just bought a '40 canister this morning from a Ford Barn Sr. Member. The second item is very helpful because it is the banjo bolt I need to make all of this work. Thanks, again.
Best,
Borron

Hi Pete,
Thank you for the info. Since I have located a canister, I'd really like to find the hose kit without the canister. Kube suggested those hose kits are around since he just sold one last week. Timing is everything, right?

I do appreciate your sending me the ebay links. If you come across a hose kit, please let me know. Thanks, again.
Best,
Borron

Hi Pete, thanks for sending this. I think this is the way for me to go since I have the pan off already to replace the flywheel, clutch and pressure plate. Thanks, again. Your replies have been very helpful to me.

Borron

If you replace the dip stick boss as Pete shows above, you only need 1/4" line with a flair fitting, like a brake line, and the hole is most likely tapered pipe thread for a brass fitting to accept the line. Good to clean up that boss anyway as they are often a source of leakage

Thanks, cas3. I appreciate the advice. I hope to have the new part in the next few days and I'll be sure to inspect it and "clean it up" as needed. I've never actually replaced the dipstick boss before, so, I'll be doing a little "on the job training" removing the existing one and properly attaching the new one with its gasket and 3 rivets.

Best,
Borron

Here's a link to one of the good vendors with the kit to replace the dip stick mountain the pan to include the oil return line. You will have to decide if you want to do it this way or be concourse correct with the original type hoses with the special bolts.

Thanks, GaryU., for the link. My ‘40 is a “driver” and while I prefer it to be as much like original as possible, I’m willing to go with new parts if they are “period correct” and improve safety and/or protect the car. So, I’m willing to go with the new oil pan boss and plumb the 1940 by-pass oil filter canister I purchased in a way that I think is period correct as well as an improvement. While not concours, I am very happy with my ‘40 and want to drive it and protect it until it’s time to pass it to the next person in line, which I hope is a long time from now. Thanks, again.

Best,
Borron

I believe " period correct" would be the new boss from 3rd gen and brake line tubing. Thats how anybody would have added a filter in those days, and of the dozen or so motors I have played with, thats how they were plumbed up. The only time I have ever seen the banjo fitting was for the timing cover edition. Not the norm I believe. Good on you for wishing to add a filter, how can it not be good for your car?

To confuse things in 1940 Ford offered two accessory oil filters. The early style is the AC style filter, which is completely different than the Fram. The AC style filter was first offered in 36 and phased out in 40 in favor of the Fram.
