If it starts and runs, it is not very likely that the resistance values are the issue. It would be more likely that the coil and/or condenser were breaking down under heat. But with trying several different coils and condensers that doesn't seem likely. I would think it would be something that can come and go like a loose connection or a fuel supply issue. Have you tried a fuel pressure gauge so you can see what is going on when the problem starts? If I was doing this, I would instrument the engine so I could see what starts the problem, as in fuel pressure gauge and a voltmeter attached to the coil to monitor it. Also might try the direct jumper from the battery to the coil again and see if it fails with that connection, that should eliminate everything ahead of the coil. Last thing from me. I haven't read every post on the two threads.
Did someone mentioned the ignition switch maybe be faulty or corroded. That could give intermittent power to the ignition. Could try a jumper on that. Best of luck!!! you'll get it figured out! |

Put in new ignition switch yesterday.
I have 3.5-4 volts to coil. But no spark now at plugs.

Yes haven’t touched those.
Borrowing a forth coil and condenser. Will try one at a time.

If you are getting power to the coil and nothing out it just about has to be in the coil/distributer/condenser. So, hard as it is to believe after all your changes, your approach may be the way to go here.

It was the coil. Guess it was intermittent then totally died. The forth one borrowed from friend worked. As always thanks for all your help.

Ran it for 4-5 years. Over 10k miles, I sent skip an email, I’m still a happy customer and I told him that. However he wants to handle I’m fine.

That is wild adileo!! One would have guessed coil or condenser from the description, but with that many changes of parts you went through you wouldn't think they would all behave the same.

Not sure when you did a good engine ground and a coil swap. But they can be related if done at the same time. Like most we all do a few things at the time sometimes. Never heard of anyone have a bad skip coil in 10 yrs here for me. Certainly it's plausible. Original ford ones last sometimes 70yrs plus.
I run 00 welding wire from the frame to engine and body. Sill run a jumper for the left taillight off the frame. Grounds are good. Not saying this is your issue. Glad your going in the right direction. . Last edited by Tinker; 02-03-2020 at 10:57 PM. |

Thanks again all. As mentioned, I shot an email to Skip. As most of the folks that do work on these fine vehicles, he’s a stand up guy and produces a top shelf product. He’s already been in contact with me and I’ll be sending him the coil today. My theory is: this past summer I took a four hour run (one way that turned into 6 hour) to the race of Gentleman. My gas tank was (I believe) original with a rust issue. This caused the car to break down multiple times and required a heavy abuse of cranking.
I’ve learned a lot with this recent car challenge, with the car and about not posting twice on same topic. I enjoy this hobby and learning new things. As mentioned by Jerry in an earlier post, at times thing can get frustrating when one is trying to solve a problem over a few days. I totally agree with that. My respectful advise to everyone is not loose patience... with whether giving advise or receiving it always have respect for one another.

Adileo, please go back to your original post and read what I posted there at end of page 3. I'm not going to go to the trouble of copying and reposting all of that on this newer thread you created. A good lesson can be learned here by everyone.....keep everything like this on one post for better continuity and to help those who are trying to help you solve a problem!

User error will take them out just as quick as it would have failed an original coil. If you don't believe this, and forget to turn your ignition switch off, when points happen to be in the closed position, and switch stays on for some extended period of time..... There are some other user errors that will also take them out, but I don't have time or care to go into that right now.
