Default Packing the oil pump with Vasoline

Would someone tell me how to pack it? Do you fill the pump with oil and then pack the holes full of Vasoline or push Vasoline into all the holes when the pump is drained of oil, or what is the procedure?

I didn't pack mine with anything. I just rigged up a funnel to the oil pressure hole in the back and let 4 qts of oil slowly percolate into the block. Jack E/NJ

Pack the gears through the inlet before installing the pickup tube. I use Motors Assembly Lube but most anything will work to provide the sealing necessary for a quick action.

I agree, a good assy lube is much better than Vaseline.
Lubriplate no. 105 is a good one.

On a 60s-80s Buick if you don't pack it, it will not prime-but those are built into the front cover. Most "regular" oil pumps that are in the pan I just submerge in oil and prime them. Some people do take the pump apart and stuff vasoline or lubriplate in every orifice around the gears. You need something to prime it instantly when it first starts so that the bearings are not run dry.

Oh, I so recall those external Buick pumps!

Your advice is spot on. I have a pressure bleeder, much like one used for bleeding brakes that attaches to the oil sending unit port. Once the valve is opened, it forces oil through the entire system. I have used this for decades on all sorts of engines.
