What am I talking myself into?!
Hey guys, hope everyone is enjoying summer so far. I have a bit of a dilemma.... over the last couple years since I started restoring my A, guys have been offering me parts for model T's. So far I have an engine and transmission from a '25, a differential I pulled from a wreckers scrap pile, a honeycomb rad (not sure what year it's for) and just a couple days ago the back 3/4 of a 26/27 touring body with fenders, and in my back pasture, I had the front section (pure coincidence as they were over 120 miles apart) . What I'm wondering is....do you think I have the start of a project?! Have any of you brought a pile of orphan 90 year old parts back from the literal grave. So far my total into it (other than gas money) is $25

It seems a shame not to do something with all those interesting bits and pieces. It beats watching the junk they have on TV these days!

Re: What am I talking myself into?!
im betting if you put the word out you could find a complete chassis some hot rodder took the body from.
I say put it together as is, not worry about a paint job, get it running and driving mechanically safe and enjoy it. Why not? you already have the pieces, the rest of the pieces you need (frame AND SUCH) should be locateable. I dont know how canada/your province works when it comes to titles or bill of sales or whatnot to gain a title from a cobbled together pile of parts.

Re: What am I talking myself into?!
It all depends on your drive and ability, if you think you can make it happen, go for it. If so find a chassis and make it a corner of the garage project, one that you work on when you have the time and find the parts, with no timeline. Have the thought pattern " give me a lug nut and I'll build a car" Good luck! and above all have fun doing it.

Re: What am I talking myself into?!
There is a guy down under who put a T touring body on an A chassis and made an interesting car.

I never lose doing what your doing.Rarely do I end up making a project out of it however. To me its all about the 'flip'... hustle it on the cheap, sell it right.

Re: What am I talking myself into?!
I've seen projects started with a long way less. I'd be asking myself "Do I really need a T?"

Re: What am I talking myself into?!
You stated you have four 20ties cars already. But how many or any were a reserection from the grave. I am sure the others are very nice cars but I would bet if you got this one together it would with out a doubt your favorite of the bunch. A sick project that does make it to a driving running car or truck just seems to grab ahold of you. Best of luck let us know what you decide and if you don't want what you have accumulated I am sure it would be gladly gobbled up by a ford barner.

Re: What am I talking myself into?!
I have restored two 1926/27 model T's starting with a lot less than you have and in worse condition, a Touring and a Roadster.
Model T's are a fun car to drive and have a special sort of magic to them. Those Buzzer coils always create so much interest as does the Flywheel Magneto. You guy's in the States are so lucky that the availability of used parts is so much better than here in Aus. and the Ford parts suppliers sell everything you might need to complete a restoration. There is room in everyones life for both a Model T and a Model A. I say go for it.

Re: What am I talking myself into?!
Thanks for the support guys, I'll probably see if I can track down a running gear somewhere/sometime . Whether it be an A undercarriage or T we will see. I love a good challenge and I don't have to rush anything as I've got a couple other projects in the shop now so I can keep my eyes open. Thanks for the "toss" updraught ....that "arrrrrrrrrgh!" made me laugh [emoji23] I'll keep ya posted as I track stuff down

Re: What am I talking myself into?!
Dragged home two more truck loads and a part trailer, I think 5 A steering columns, 1 T. Around a dozen front axels -A,T,Dodge Bros , even a 32 drop axel, 3 engines, 4 transmissions, half dozen rear axels, whatever looked good I saved from the scrapper, more there but my back was killing me after loading that all up.
PS. I will share for a case of liquid refreshment [emoji2] or swap for bits I need. |

TV? Who needs TV. I cancelled all of my cable/satellite TV years ago. Paying for something I didn't use was cutting into my old car fund.

Re: What am I talking myself into?!
In 1968 I pieced together a '28 roadster pickup from swap meets to drive till I restored my '30 cabriolet. I had $147 in the WHOLE truck! Still driving it as the cabriolet is only about 2/3 done, I didm;t figure it would be 45 years!

Looks like you even picked up a wheelbarrow to move the small stuff around the yard.

Re: What am I talking myself into?!
MY "T" from high school days (a couple of years ago). Ended up putting a model A tranny and rear end in this rig. Had 9 speeds forward and 3 or 4 in reverse. When I went in the army, my dad gave it to a guy along with my A body for 50 bucks.

Re: What am I talking myself into?!
You wouldn't want to carry to much stuff in that wheelbarrow. It probably weighs 60 pounds by itself. I had one like that once, but it had a metal wheel. It was too heavy to push around empty!

I picked up the VW at the same place for $140 for parts to help fix up the '69 I'm working on for my wife. I've already got the new floor pans in it and the heater channels are sitting ready for instal when the snow flies. Thanks for everyone's words of encouragement Malcolm PS. The wheel barrow has been around the farm longer than I, yes it weighs at least 60 lbs. I wasn't expecting to be coming home with a load that day, it wasn't fun throwing it up on top of al that pile after I hand bombed that load on the truck haha |
