You can reduce tire pressure in the spare for your tire well to perhaps 20 pounds or so to fit it if needed - and it will still get you home.

Many of our guys run 2.15 60R x 16'S, but use 2.05 60R x 16's in the fender wells for a better fit, and they don't look funny.---Bill W.

Gerard,
You can modify the carrier plate to make it easier to get the spare in and out of the well. You remove the lug bolts from the carrier plate. Tap the holes the same size as the lugs or lug nuts. I'm sorry the thread size escapes me right now.
Next you loctite a lug nut to each of the lugs you removed from the plate or use short lengths of threaded rod.
Finally leave the plate just loose enough on the carrier arm so you can move it around. Then when you mount your spare, you put the tire in the well at an angle and push it back against the plate. Screw your lug converted lug nut bolts in to the plate and tighten. Works slick even with Firestone tires.
Hope this helps,
Jon

The threads are 1/2-20. But it is kinda hard to thread a square hole once you remove the lug bolts. When I made mine, I had nuts welded on the back of the carrier plate.
