Default please advise - 39 coupe

Hi Guys

I've determined that one of my water pumps is the culprit for my rattle. So here comes another first for me - replacing the pumps.

First question, I have a four post lift, is it better to change these out on the lift or the floor?

The second question (based on using the lift) I plan on putting a small piece of 2X4 on the bottle jack and across the front of the oil pan, to jack engine up. Is this ok? Of course if I don't use the lift then a I'll use a floor jack with same thought process.

Rest seems pretty straight forward (but keep me straight): drain antifreeze, remove hoses, lift engine enough to clear mounts, undo two outside bolts, then the one hidden (carefully), then re-install new pumps w gaskets and grease, etc....

Thanks in Advance

Andy

Andy, sounds like you've got the drill down. I use the four post lift to change the water pumps on most of my Flatheads, (it's not necessary on the '39 LZ or the '53 F-100. I have a steel pan (that spans the lift rails), I use it to place a bottle jack with a short 2x4 on it, to protect the oil pan. Remember to remove the cotter pins and loosen the nuts on the motor mounts before you lift the engine. I only bring the car up to the first notch on the lift, it makes it easier for me to work from the top as well as the bottom. I also use stainless steel bolts (especially the ones that go inside) on the water pumps. Don't forget to clean the block surface. I also use some gasket cement on the pumps and place the gasket on them with the bolts pushed in from the back side, to let the glue set up a bit before mounting the pumps to the block. That helps keep the gaskets lined up. I also use some Indian Head Shellac on the inside of the hoses where they attach to the pumps and the radiator. Have fun and have a very Merry Christmas my friend.

Just to be safe, I use a 6 point socket on that hidden bolt and replace it with a stainless steel version when the new pump goes on.

Thanks I'd like to hit with 6 point socket on an impact gun on slow. But not sure I'll have enough room.

But good advise, I'll take it slow and use 6 point socket.

You happen to know size of that hidden bolt?

You should squirt some rust buster (brand of your choice)on the bolt that is inside the pump (I usually try to remove those bolts first). I would not recommend using an impact gun. You can use a ratchet with a breaker bar and get to the bolt from the top or from underneath. I have had those bolt heads snap in the past, and it is no fun...

Nice going Andy, and you got everything done on the first try. Old Henry must be smiling at you. Love it when a plan comes together.
