Default Mechanical Brakes

Any one know of a Mechanical Brake specialist that can rebuilt my brakes system? I live in Southern California Los Angeles County or San Bernardino County. Seems that there are not many resources out here.

You can do it. It won't be a fast process but it will be satisfying. Randy Gross is a wealth of info, but I'm sure if you take your time and work with a local machine shop on the stuff you can't do. you can be successful. Backing plates can be sent to Snyders for rebuilding also

Ask Randy what rebuilt sub assemblies he can provide. If he doesn't want to tackle the whole job try Alan Mest, (310) 532-8657. Sorry I don't know of anyone closer. You might try asking at your local Model A club.

I really don't understand why more of you don't try us out for all of your brake needs.

We have cast iron drums, relined shoes. e bands.

We rebuild backing plates and can swedge our drums on your hubs.

Ask on this website and see how others feel about our product, quality of work performed, turn around time, and customer service.

I'm in the middle of doing this job myself. I'm using the Red Les Andrews book as my reference. I'm also adding Flathead Ted Floaters, rebuilding the springs, steering, and front end at the same time. I'm using core parts so I only have to take the car off the road to change the old for new once the new is all done. This way my car down time is minimal. The Les book is pretty straight forward and easy to follow. I can try to answer any questions you have also. I have heard really good things about Randy also if he's close that would be a very valuable resource. Good luck on this

Of course it depends on how early your Model A is.If it's among the first six months of 28 it is an AR and you're into a whole new kettle of fish unless you want to upgrade your brakes to the "newer" style. It's very hard to get info and some parts for the single braking system (service and emergency brake combined) as well as the AR in general. If your car has separate emergency brakes than you have a late 28-31 Model A.
There's no info in Les Andrews book on the early brakes or anything else for the AR for that matter.

The vendors used to have them, but I no longer see them listed.

Randy recently (last month) rebuilt all 4 of my brakes (backing plates, swedged new cast iron drums onto my hubs, turned them, etc). Hard to believe what I got back was built on the same backing plates I sent him! High quality work at an extremely fair price & quick turn around. I had waffled about doing it myself, but I'm very happy I sent them to Randy so I could get back out on the road.
