Default stuck transmission?

I just reinstalled my engine after the replacing pressure plate and clutch disc.
Now my transmission seems to be stuck. The gear shift lever will move but the R,1,2,3 pattern is not there. There is no neutral position. The only way to disengage the engine is with the clutch pedal pushed in and the gear shift level in a strange (almost 2nd gear) position.

The shifting forks are correctly seated in the both sliding gear collars.

The fingers are free from the throw-out bearing (no tension). Throwout bearing moves as it should.

When I removed the engine I separated it at the U-joint. Is it possible that I could have improperly reinstalled at this point? Bound up maybe. It seemed to reinstall smoothly.

I had no transmission problems previously. It was perfect.

Any ideas?

Take the transmission shifter cover off , slide the gears back to the neutral positions and reinstall cover with gear shift lever in neutral position, being careful not to move any gars while positioning the cover. You should now be in neutral and have the normal H pattern.

Agree with Mike. I think you put the top back on the gearbox with the selector forks in the wrong place.

Push the clutch in and try to rotate one of the rear wheels. This will clear your u joint.

Thank you very much Barner’s! “we” got it. I believe what happened was the ball of the shifting tower had come out of one the notches in the shifting forks. 5th time is a charm huh?!

Glad you found it ! When putting stuff back together I like to try rotating moving testing the stuff before bolting the stuff tight, this way we will find problems before we think we are finished. Again glad you found it and didn't destroy something! having a transmission stuck in to gears will blow up a transmission, this happened to me with dad's Chevy truck before I got my A. After I got my A, dad's repair bills where a lot less :-)
