39 Ford Clutch Throw Out Hub.
What sort of interference fit should there be between the clutch throw out hub and the fitted throw out bearing.
Suspect my almost slide on fit with a new bearing suggests too much wear at hub locating surface. Time for a new Hub? Appreciate assistance. Phil NZ |

Re: 39 Ford Clutch Throw Out Hub.
It is a snug fit. Can be slight press or need to hammer to tap the hub in place. Not a slide fit.

Those hubs were not machined for an interference fit. Rather, they were machined for a match fit. I'd suggest you measure both the hub O.D. and the bearing I.D. accurately and see what you have. I'd be satisfied with no more than .001" wear on the hub.

Re: 39 Ford Clutch Throw Out Hub.
Thanks for that info.
Will check measurements. But with items apart seem a little too easy to fit on Will maybe go for the loctite. Is this the same which can be used for the clutch plate securing screws? Or to just use new ones with spring washers? Appreciated Phil NZ |

Locktite is okay in many applications but was never intended to fill voids. Of course it's up to you which direction you'll take but me? - given the labor involved to replace that hub later, now may be the time to skip the easy route and do it properly.

Re: 39 Ford Clutch Throw Out Hub.
Yes you are right, Kube, as already missed out replacing the clutch plate and only did clutch disc and bearings. And now need to do the clutch plate as some slipping was still occuring. Thought plate looked ok but it should have been checked properly with spring tensions etc. Always a learning curve there some where. At low load was ok but not high load. Idling: 810 lbs. 6000 rrpm:1685. So if springs not right wont get the 1685 at high load which i believe is what i was experiencing.
These Ford Service Bullitens have all this useful info. As they say do it right first time and do it correct. Thanks, Phil NZ |

There was NEVER a time when my advice did not prove to be 100% correct. It wasn't a big deal to me as I got paid to replace the clutch again. Sure, I felt bad for the clients but always felt I did my best to offer the initial advice.

Phil, don't forget to replace the pilot bearing/bushing while you're in there.

Re: 39 Ford Clutch Throw Out Hub.
My late uncle taught me to replace all four items: clutch, pressure plate, TO bearing and pilot bearing.

Re: 39 Ford Clutch Throw Out Hub.
Yep thats the plan. 4 items to be attended to.!! Now just awaiting parts.
The clutch plate has the orange coloured springs but unless tested hard to tell by observation and just by pushing down on the 3 fingers. At least this time came apart smoothly, rolled the rear end back, leaving brake line in tack as enough movement for this. Wheels off and rolled on rims only. Phil NZ |

Re: 39 Ford Clutch Throw Out Hub.
I just slid my new TO bearing on about two hours ago. And yes I see it slid on a bit too easily. Thanks to this post I will check a couple more I have around the shop, and hope for a tap on fit. Thanks!

Re: 39 Ford Clutch Throw Out Hub.
Thats what i would expect also a light tap on fit as opposed to an easy slide on or press fit.
