I developed a noise under the car when coasting - not all the time, but a lot . (low speed -I'm afraid to go faster now that I hear this)
The noise stops when I depress the clutch.Sort of bap-bap bap as if something is hitting something else while rotating. Makes me nervous!
Visual once-over not helpful Any suggestions as to where to look?

What year and model of car?

"The noise stops when I depress the clutch." is a clue - transmission problem.....

Perhaps the Universal joint. Do you get out of 1st gear? If the noise goes away in second you have lost a tooth on either 1st gear or the cluster. I am afraid the transmission probably has to come out to find the problem. If your car has a 39 or earlier transmission you can easily take the top off and have a look.

If early ford with torque tube, possibly a broken pin in the driveshaft coupler.

Could be a loose pinion nut if a heavier sound and only on the overrun. I think there was a similar post here recently that was thought to be a pinion nut loose.

It is also possible that the bolt holding the U-joint in place has worked loose. That is the one inside the joint using a special thick washer, on the transmission output shaft. If the U-joint works loose. it will contact the inside of the cover on the front end of he torque tube, making a noise. It is easier to detach the rear axle and pull t back than to remove the engine and transmission.
