Carb Cleaner

Rebuilding a couple of 97s this winter. Need recommendations as to best cleaning solution for bodies. Dunk no longer available. Any suggestions?

I just had good results rebuilding a 94 soaking in Berryman overnight and then ultrasonic cleaning in pine sol solution with heat. I hit the passages with carb cleaner in between the baths.

I've seen videos that say the pine-sol thing works well. non-scented blend. I got two 94's to do also.

As far as this carburetor cleaner is concerned you might as well drink a six-pack and P on your carburetor it will clean just as well

We used the Berryman Dip at work, that was good stuff. That was 25-years-ago, but then our safety department ruled it to be too dangerous. It did stain your hands yellow just from rinsing off the carb and then your hands smelled for terrible for days. I was young and stupid then (now I'm old & stupid), use gloves!


After they took away the good stuff we used the carb spray cans with the straw. Force the end into "each" hole. Spray it until a steady spray comes out the other end of the hole. Be really careful, if the hole is plugged bad it will blow the nozzle off and spray right back into your eyes. Good-God does that hurt bad. You'll be sure you are blind.

Sometimes a hole will be plugged so bad with something solid that it needs air pressure to clear it out. I just did one the other day for a neighbor. It was a chipper shredder. His engine wouldn't run after he rebuilt the carb (didn't run before). There is not much to those little carbs. I found one hole I could not get the carb spray to go through. It finally took 125 lbs. of air pressure to clear out whatever was lodged in there.

The best thing to use for this is an air nozzle with a removable end. Remove the screwed on safety end that restricts the air pressure (at your own risk). It will not have enough pressure to do what you want. Then adapt a piece of 1/8" steel brake line to it. Then you can force the brake line against the holes and blow them out. You can bend the brake line if that helps you get a better shot at a hole. This can be a dangerous tool, use goggles.

Like that Auto Zone "Super Purple" for the soak. Water clean-up and easy on the hands if you "forget" to put on your rubber gloves...

Thanks for all the input. I went to Harbor Freight in Niagara Falls, bought the ultrasonic unit for 79 bucks, less 20% discount coupon, spent another 100 on stuff I didn't know I needed, sealed the rim of the inner pan to the body with acrylic sealant as recommended by other posts (so you can pour out liquid without gumming up the internals). Can't buy Berryman here in Canada, so got a gallon of carb cleaner for 65 bucks. Plan to use it for a short time, then pine sol with heat. When done, my '97s are going to cost more than the brand new jobs. But anybody can buy new.

Cheapest no-frills gallon+ crockpot you can get at WalMart. Fill with your favorite cleaner like straight Simple Green or Zep Citrus. Throw in the carb. Cover it. Plug it in. Forget it for a day or two except for topping off with water as needed. Jack E/NJ

go to your local auto paint store get a gallon of laquer thinner, poor in a plastic pan ,soak all the pieces ,use small paint brush to scrub ,blow off or air dry, use carb spray on all the passages and compressed air to blow out CAUTION DO NOT SMOKE

Doesn't that get hot enough to melt the lead channel plugs in certain carbs ? Or do you remove them first ?

I have a tiny drill bit set that works great for cleaning carb passages.
It comes with a small handle like that of a exacto knife. You can go by hand and feel any obstructions.

Lead melt at about 621F (328C), if your crock pot gets that hot you have other things to worry about. Like the whole carb melting into a glob in the bottom!
