Default How to remove 1936 hood hinge rods?

Does anyone know of a method to remove these. The curve of the front makes it look very difficult.

They have to go out towards the rear of the hood, lay it upside down
(or downside up if your from NZ or a Aussie). Oil the entire length.

I made a tool from a 3/8 square rod about 10 inches long. Grind off about half of it leaving no more than 3/16th's hanging over. This will act as a guide to keep the piece from going too far in and denting the hood. Hold the bar at 90 degrees to the rod. The notch will slide along the rolled over edges of the hood.

Best is a 2 man job. You tap the bar while #2 wiggles the hood side. Adding a vise grip to the back end, the #2 guy can pull and twist while you tap.

I believe you have to drive them from the front and out the back. I put some oil on the hinges and drive them out with a length of brass brazing rod that is slightly less than 1/4" in diameter. When the rod begins to move, apply more oil. I use 1/4" SS rod when I put them back together.

I drive the rods with a brass rod until I can get a electric drill attached to the end. I then run the drill forwards & backwards to turn the old rod with plenty of penetrating oil .This just spins the rods out . Has worked the last 3 times

I prefer a cordless drill as they are smaller and easier to handle.

Yes, the drill works great..I've removed several 32 hood pins this way.

Great tip.

Hope I remember it if I ever need to take it apart.

I have used ordinary hardware store steel rod since brass rod is not as commonly available and the procedure that 36coupe3w suggested.
Sometimes need to start the process with a roll pin punch to get the rod to move initially.
After removal, I use a short length of small stainless cable in a drill to "clean" the
hinges after the rod is removed.
Laying it on a piece of old carpet on the workbench helps eliminate chasing it if you are working by yourself.
