Leftover flathead parts
So like many other folks, I've torn a few 59ab style motors apart looking for a good block. What do folks do with all the extra parts? Are any of them worth selling? Will I ever build another flathead... who knows. None of them are 4 inch cranks or rare heads. Should I just keep an extra crank, cam and heads and sell the rest? I've kinda looked around at what parts are selling for, but half the time unless you were desperate it doesnt seem like its worth the cost of shipping. Anyways.. I was just wondering if I'm overlooking anything. I have plenty of storage, but don't need to collect a bunch of stuff I'll never use either.
Opinions? |

Re: Leftover flathead parts
I tried several years ago to give 5 59ab crankshafts away for FREE and no one wanted them. Ended up feeling very guilty and scarped them. Dave/Green Bay

Re: Leftover flathead parts
There's a flathead rebuilder not too far from me that builds very nice engines. I have seen him give away complete engines because he found them too cracked to repair efficiently. Like many of you guys here, he only uses top quality new parts and far more often than not his engines are built with big bore, aftermarket cam, heads and intake. Why put a used starter, etc. on that? He has a 55 gallon drum out front for his used parts. He has let me dig

Re: Leftover flathead parts
Someone somewhere would most likely be interested in used parts, but I can never find them!

Re: Leftover flathead parts
I used hand me down 8BA crank , rods on my last 59 ab overhaul . They all came out of one motor . The block was given to me and I lucked out . Use 5 over ford piston and case iron ring . Replaced all the bearings and turned down the crank .
Nice beater ....

Re: Leftover flathead parts
Kind of confirms what I was guessing. Maybe someone somewhere, but probably never will use the parts. Guess I’ll save enough parts for one more motor and give, scrap or turn the rest into garage art.

Re: Leftover flathead parts
Just have to assess the parts. Anything like Gens/starters have valuable. Bit's and pieces like oil baffles, fittings (oil senders, ect), truck pans can too. There is a 40-42 intake wiper vacuum fitting that is near impossible to find. It's cast and usually breaks. Early 32-36 water pumps are getting a bit rare too. Rebuilt or new reproduction.
All the little stuff. A well cracked block it not so good, junk is junk. Just don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Last edited by Tinker; 10-30-2018 at 10:01 PM. |

I like to keep the cracked blocks to play around with. They can be cut up to view the interiors or used for mocking up stuff, etc.

Re: Leftover flathead parts
People like me will take what we can get! But nobody gives away parts.. there isn't any to throw away.
These sad tattered remains ere fought over for 50 years, and nobody could get them. This is the best you can hope for, you guys don't know what you got! https://youtu.be/YaxvHEKS910?t=224
