oil pressure

Just wondering what is the normal oil pressre at idle and at driving 40 or 45 on a 29 stock motor. thanks

Oil pressure will probably be 4 to 5 lbs at 40 to 45 mph and 0 at idle. Some is better than none.

Not much if any at idle, 40-45 mph maybe 2 or 3, stock pump is a volume not pressure pump. Check for flow by loosening the drain back tube from the valve chamber, have a pan under it :-)

You'll get lots of pressure if you restrict the open end of the oil flow tube, but the Model A only lifts the oil a foot, then lets gravity feed the mains and the rods splash it around.

The oil pump supplies oil to the reservoirs in the valve chamber. Gravity feeds the oil into the main bearings, the connecting rod troughs and the camshaft bearings. There is one exception. The center camshaft bearing gets oil directly from the pump.

The oil pressure that is essential is developed inside of the bearings, and it reaches thousands of PSI.

When I first start the car I am at 4lbs. After it warms up I am at 1-2lbs.

I always avoided getting an oil gauge, but this thread makes me wonder. Is there a nice "old-timey" looking oil pressure gauge that is 0-5 psi, or maybe 0-10 max?

Yes, I had one of each, but sold one of them.

thanks for all the input. As i previusly posted I dropped my oil pan and found lint covering my oil pump filter cleand it and put pan back on. car starts cold with 20 lbs of oil pressure as it warms it droppes to about 2 lbs at idle on road driving about 40-45 I have about 5lbs using 20w50w oil.sounds like im ok

Remember, many gauges "might" NOT be TOTALLY ACCURATE!

This reminds me of the time I built a knucklehead Harley motor I asked an old fella they cut his teeth on them about an oil pressure gauge you said don't put one on that you won't sleep at night I have never forgotten that

MANY years back, I "heard" that Porsches' "optional" CONTINENTAL Engine had a Roller Bearing lower end & you had to keep them revved MORE than the regular engine!

Our 29 reacts just as yours, also using 20-50w HD oil.

Not a "Myth", but a combination of two unrelated facts.

The Porsche Continental was a badge applied to the pre 356A cars imported to the US from October 54 to October 55. No special engine. All had the 55 HP flat four, pushrod. There was no "special" Continental engine.

The Carrera engine came along later in the 356's life and did have a roller bearing lower end (as well as 4 overhead cams). It was essentially a race only engine, but you could buy one in a street legal production car (very expensive). They would rev higher than a regular 356 engine and likely needed a fast idle due to the lumpy cams.

if a engine has a roller bearing crank , your not going to see a lot of oil pressure .
