Default Oval speedometer binds in reverse

My oval speedometer will sometimes bind up when going in reverse. Snapped my drive cable. It seems to work just fine going forward and seems to indicate speed good but when I go in reverse it will lockup sometimes. Curious if anyone who has been inside one of these would have any input. Wondering if there is an area where there could be a broken tooth on a gear perhaps. Just curious if anyone has any thoughts. Will be pulling it out as soon as i get a little time . Thanks.

You have two gears in there that work the speedometer, the drive gear, the big one, and the driven gear, the small one. You may have a chipped or broken tooth on one ir both. You can pull the small one and check it, the big one can be check thru the hole, jack the rear and rotate tires to see all the gears on the big one.

It's probably your main shaft in the speedo. They bind up over the years and it is very hard to free them up. Try to turn your speedo drive with your fingers. Bet you can't. It is a big deal to get that shaft out without messing up something else. You can spin it and try to get oil in there. Good luck.

I would take the plug out of the back of the housing, the housing is slightly peened over it.Dig out the dried up grease and relube,I used lubriplate which seemed to work just fine,it might solve your problem.

Personally, I don't like Lubriplate as it likes to separate, the oil oozes out of the thickener.
