Condensers for 1947 Lincoln

Hello!

I know, it is forum for Ford but I hope to get help here.
I need new condensers for my 1947 Lincoln V12. As far as I know I need some with 0.31 to 0.34 micro farad. But here I can get just some with 0.27 micro farad. I don’t know if this will work with no problems for the contact points.
I have still some old original style but they have 0.44 and 0.55 micro farad.

Where could I get condensers with the correct value and I can use for the Lincoln?

Thank you, we will see. Oh yes, I just see that it was my first post but I am registered here since 10 years… beside the Lincoln we have some Model Ts and As. Perhaps I wanted to ask something and I solved then the problem by myself.

The reproduction "trash can" condensers I make use a .22 microfarad capacitor. They are the only units I have found that provide the reliability needed for long term use. Interestingly, I attempted to make a .33 microfarad version using the same brand and line of capacitors, but they proved unreliable. (For comparison the original Mallory "trash cans" were rated at .36 microfarads.) While it seems that these are too low, the actual fact is that they are ideally suited for use with modern coils. The capacitance of the condenser is determined by the inductance of the coil, and most modern coils use a condenser in the low .20's range. It seems that there are now very few original Ford coils in use these days as time has taken it's toll on them. Most modern "can" coils use a low twenties condenser, and even Skip's coils are best suited for that rating.

In everyday use, the actual rating of the condenser doesn't make a lot of difference. The only effect is a slight shortening in point life. With the way most of us use these vehicles, the difference will never be noticed. My suggestion is to find the highest quality US made condenser that fits and go with it, regardless of it's rating.

and thank you for the answer. OK, I understand. The coil was recently restored by Skip Haney. I tried to ask him what he would say which capacity he would say but in the last days I got now answer.

Well, if 0.27 micro farad would be ok, I have several options here. Actually. We have here in Germany brands like Beru, Bosch, Bremi but all are sold out with these condensers. The only brand I can get here is Valeo in France. They make original equipment for lots of cars. So perhaps it is not the worst brand. But I have two of these condensers in use, but one is already broken. Never was on the street with this.
But I can get them for a low price at the moment and if you would say, 0.27 micro farad would be ok, I would take them again. We are not so much on the street with this car, perhaps just 1000km per year or so.

I realize you are over seas , however, a source for Lincoln Prts here is Boos Herral in the states in Indiana.

Thank you for the hint with Boos Herral. I bought in the past already parts from George Trickett, beside me here I have his old catalogue from 2002. Well, here you can get nothing for the V12 Lincoln. A handful are around here. The next time I would need the cylinders for the power windows because just one is working.

I got now the information by Skip that for his repaired coils the best are condensers between 0.15 to 0.20 micro farads. And a recommendation for Napa IH 200 condenser.

I'm kinda surprised by how low that rating is. Given the tolerance with these setups, I'd hafta think my condensers (.22 µF) are a good fit.

Me too, but Skip said, that he use since 20 years these condensers. Probably he knows what the best is for his coils. I don't know how much micro farads the Napa has.
