Starter and fly wheel
Had a grinding noise when I pushed the starter switch on my 30 Tudor so I pulled the started and noticed one bolt was lose on the bendix. Should I just tighten the bolt and reinstall the starter? Also I noticed there are 4 teeth on the fly wheel that are bad but the rest is good. Can I get by without replacing the fly wheel gear? Thanks

Re: Starter and fly wheel
Tighten the bolt and use blue Permatex on the bolts and use the proper washers when installing.
Only 4 teeth will not be the end of the world, I would not worry about it. You should while the starter is out get a long rod and tap on the flywheel ring gear to make sure it has not moved out of place. Keep turning over the engine with the hand crank until you have the entire ring gear tapped on. |

Re: Starter and fly wheel
Thank you for info, would it also be a good idea to have the bendix and or starter checked out to make sure the bendix is not bent or anything else is wrong with it?

Re: Starter and fly wheel
I am running the modern Bendix on my starter. There are different quality modern Bendix drives out there so if you are not happy with the one you ordered, try a different vendor. The screw is locked in place by a ring that is retained in position by a heavy spring. I carry a spare Bendix but don't feel that I will use it any time soon. The modern Bendix is used on a Ford tractor.
If you use the original Bendix, when you replace the bolt, use a new bolt and a new locking washer, the one that bends over the head of the bolt.

Re: Starter and fly wheel
Make sure the starter ring gear is flush up against the stop. Repos do not fit on the flywheel as tight as the originals. When the starter engages it wants to pull the ring gear away from the stop. Henry should have listened to Edsel and put the stop on the other side.

290 is the wick-in version so you just place a drop or three where the ring gear contacts the flywheel and watch it disappear into the crack.

Re: Starter and fly wheel
I just put a new one on and had to heat it a good bit to get it to slip on. After it’s cooled I can’t imagine it coming loose. Appears pretty tight.

Re: Starter and fly wheel
When you re-install the starter, first put a stud in the top bolt hole, slide the starter in place using that stud for alignment, then install the other 2 bolts, finally, remove the stud and replace it w/the proper bolt and tighten all the bolts.
